Even though fully standardized 5G won’t be commercially available until 2020, operators can’t afford to sit back and not prepare. 5G will address a much wider range of spectrum bands and use cases and services than we have seen in previous mobile generations. As such 5G will bring about radical changes to the mobile operator’s network.

Preparing for 5G involves understanding the different steps in the standardization process, the spectrum bands being considered, and how operators are thinking about their initial network rollouts. Preparation also includes understanding what an operator should be doing now to transform its network even before it can deploy standardized 5G equipment. Networks, however, aren’t the only issue with 5G. The number of devices connected to the network are expected to exponentially grow with 5G opening all new security challenges that operators will need to address.
