Ovum looks back at the enterprise network services trends that helped shape 2018 and projects the momentum of these trends and enterprise requirements into 2019.

  • SD-WAN concepts are now mainstream for larger enterprises. But many enterprises are still squatting on proofs of concept rather than moving forward with commercial deployment. Many more enterprises also still need to be convinced they should adopt SD-WAN through a managed service provider partner.
  • Enterprises have embraced virtualization elsewhere, but they are still only dabbling in commercial managed NFV-based services. The industry would benefit greatly from an adoption catalyst that would push enterprises to adopt sooner rather than later.
  • SD-WAN is not causing most enterprises to pull the plug completely on MPLS VPN. But enterprises have embraced hybrid networking and its ability to use internet VPNs, including over broadband and wireless access, where they once may have used private IP VPNs.

Features and Benefits

  • Presents changes in enterprise adoption for commercial SD-WAN and NFV platforms and services that Ovum has observed over the last year.
  • Understand the challenges service providers face in trying to get enterprises to embrace and adopt managed SD-WAN services more widely.
  • Understand how service providers can leverage their networks to reintegrate fragmenting enterprise services management.
  • Understand what important existing and emerging trends Ovum expects to see grow in 2019.

Key questions answered

  • Will SD-WAN platform providers be successful in offering an alternative route for service providers to implement third-party virtual network functions?
  • What is the chance that the proliferation of SD-WAN platforms gets a clear definition and starts to organize and standardize in 2019?
  • Will service provider NFV platforms open up for vendors to introduce and manage their own virtual network functions in 2019?
  • What is the role of data center and cloud providers in networking, and how is that projected to change?
