After almost four years of economic slowdown, Brazil is gradually treading the recovery path. During the economic crisis, the Brazilian mobile market has seen a drastic decline in total connections.

  • Brazil is gearing up for its 5G auction. In 2019, Anatel announced its plan to auction spectrum in the 700MHz, 2.3GHz, 3.5GHz, and 26GHz bands for 5G services. The spectrum auction, which is set to take place in 1Q20, may be delayed until mid 2020.
  • The country is taking steps toward the consolidation of the telecoms market. The first quarter of 2019 saw the acquisition of Nextel by Claro. In September 2019, the competition authority, CADE, approved Claro's acquisition of Nextel without restriction. This move makes Claro the second largest mobile operator in Brazil.
